I’m not entirely sure what the rules are about taking instruments in the cabin. Maybe someone with experience can chime in? I suspect each airline has their own rules. Nowadays it seems you have to pay extra for everything. If airlines insist on a surcharge for baggage they should be extra careful with it.

Hmmm, why don’t you guys take your instruments into a cabin? There’s a lot of space in a case over a seat and also plenty of room near a door.
