Re: A string sounds wrong

Is it seated right in the nut and the bridge? Issues there can cause weird overtone sounds.

If you play fretted notes up the neck is there a point at which the wrongness of the sound goes away? If so there's a fret issue.

Re: looking for instrumentals

There's quite a few Jeff Beck numbers that are instrumentals. Many of them are covers but with a big shift towards being guitar based. Some suggestions here are:

Beck's Bolero
Cause We've Ended As Lovers
Freeway Jam
Goodbye Porkpie Hat
Head for Backstage Pass

Re: right hand exercises

Depending on how bad and in what way you hurt your finger you might consider giving the guitar a miss for a day or two at least. You don't want to exacerbate the injury. During that time you could work on theory, ear training, voice, buy a harmonica, etc. If you don't know barre chords you could wor...

Re: strumming pattern

If you keep moving in a uniform consistent pattern then the numbers and the &'s will be down strums and the e's and the a's will be up strums. So this would apply to every strumming pattern or just to this one pattern? Well, first off there are no absolute rules when strumming but there are general...

Re: strumming pattern

The e and a (sometimes eh and ah) are uses for 16th note counting. So you would have four strums in the duration of a single quarter note. If you have the metronome set to click on a quarter note you would strum four times during the interval from that click to the next - 1 e & a. You can say this a...

Re: Coated Strings

I like the D'Addario EXP. I've used them on my acoustic for a few years now. They recently came out with an EXP set for electrics. I picked up a set of them and put them on one of my electrics at the beginning of the year as a test. It worked out pretty great. I didn't find any real difference in fe...

Re: intonation

And if none of that fixes it you can put on a Nashville bridge. It has a longer range of travel for the saddles.

Re: Ovation Guitar in Denver

I too imagine that the salesperson was trying to upsell you to a more expensive guitar. However , I wonder if the combination of plastic back/sides and wood top would lead to more cracking? I could see it as a theoretical possibility but I don't know if it happens in practice or not. The wood top wi...

Re: Best British Band

Hmmm, there's a big missing hole in the late 70's / early 80's. None of the ska / rude boys type bands are listed. Specials Squeeze Madness English Beat In that same time period were the post-punk / early goth bands- Joy Division Bauhaus Both of those movements came out of Britain and were / are hig...

Re: Acoustic Guitar Strings

i don't like the coating. after a few weeks it tends to shred and feel rough. however, give them a few days to break in and the bassiness won't be so bad. There are different coatings out there so don't write off coated strings if you don't like one of them. I tried the Elixirs and hated them. They...

Re: Old Lady Smell

It might not have been the strings directly. It could have been one of those spray can string lubricants. Some of them have a smell to them.

Or perhaps your guitar tech is an old lady? :P

Re: impossible truss rod?

Just had a really close look, it seems to be round on the inside but hextagonal on the outside, i think you might be right, i think its been stripped (werid) - previous owner must have done it, shame this guitar used to play amazingly. Are you sure that you don't need a hex socket type of tool rath...

Re: Lessons to jam not to become a musician

Maybe it's something about being left-brain analytical types that makes learning guitar a bit more challenging. For instance, what if someone who has a background in dance tried to learn guitar? Would he/she have an easier time because they already have an idea of how to train their body? My guess ...

Re: Classical Guitar Woods

I've heard that about La Patrie guitars. The problem is that nobody in my area sells them. I wanted to take a look at one, but I also have a real problem with buying guitars on the internet that's not from Rondo. I would rather play them first. La Patrie is one of the Lasido brands. Lasido is the p...

Re: Lessons to jam not to become a musician

I am a programmer and find new programming language easier than learning a new combination of chords switch. I'm a software engineer too and I've never really had any difficulty learning a new programming language or math or physics or anything like that. But learning to play the guitar is ...
