Re: Song Suggestions Needed

Since you're playing for a church, may I suggest some Rich Mullins songs? "Step by Step" and "Creed" are great songs and even though they're played with a hammered dulcimer they can played with a guitar. Another thing I do is to change the Hymns to a moderen beat or to a blues feel that you feel comf...

Flatwounds on a Telecaster, yay or nay?

Many years ago,I lived by this older gentleman who had a 1951 Esquire. It was blond with a maple neck. The neck had black finger marks from extended use.He also used medium flatwounds on his.I didn't like the feel of the heavy strings. At that time I was still learning and I had .008's on my Fender Bro...

Any of you roundneck resonator players play in standard ?

I know today the resonator is usaully played in open tuning,Open G,Open D,etc. for slide players.Back in the days before ampflication,it was used in jazz or bluegrass bands to be equal to the trumpet or banjo. This was also before the booming dreadnaught. My wife often sings at nursing homes and wants...

Today's cheapies are better than yesterday cheapies!

In a lot of guitar forums, they say a lot of bad things about today's cheap guitars. I can tell that most of them are gear snobs and a lot younger than me.For those that have had nightmares about their first guitars 40 some years ago,you all have to admit that playing a $100 Epiphone today is like pl...

Re: I guess I should sell or give my guitars

Watching clips of Tommy Emmanuel,Phil Keaggy,Chet Atkins only inpires me to play more. Will my playing status ever reach the peak of greatness like those I mentioned? Most likely and 100% no.But I can enjoy hearing them and I can even steal a lick or two.I've felt like the guitar is a way to express ...

I find that playing a nylon strung guitar is relaxing.

I've been playing my Yamaha APX-5NA for a couple of days.No picks, fingers only and not plugging in.I find it very relaxing to play songs normally on a regular acoustic with a pick on a classical and using fingers.I've been playing "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and I got to admit that it sounds bett...

Recomend me a decent low priced classical guitar.

The more I pick up my Yamaha Apex classical, the more I want a true full size classical guitar. Some that have caught my attention, one a Yamaha for $139.It doesn't need to be a solid wood or even a solid top. What it does need is to be a full size classical. My Apex is a thin body with cutaway, and the ...

Re: If you could play any picking style, what would it be?

I'm still working on being a rock guitarist....if it wasn't my all-consuming passion, and I had enough time to spare, I'd go the Alan Green route and study classical guitar, but at 53, I think I'm a bit too old and set in my ways to even become an average guitarist in a completely different style. ...

If you could play any picking style, what would it be?

I must be getting old. When I was younger I wished I could play like (fill in the space),most hard rock electric players. Now,not so much.I haven't touched my electrics in over a year.I have a strong sensation to play like those good bluegrass pickers. We had a family that came to church on a special ...

Re: "I’ll never be a great banjo player"

I started guitar when I was 25. I started on acoustic, then in the age of hair bands,I wanted to play electric. After learning a few tricks like these guitarists done,I studied guys like SRV and Eric Clapton. While in the "rock" world, they're not seen as virtruosio's,but they could definlty play the b...

Re: Real guitar teaches you to play as easy as Guitar Hero

In my opinion, your ears are one of the best teachers. For easy lessons, there's good ones here on this site. Tabs are very limited,it will allow you to play like the player note for note. My brother is a good student of the guitar.I was playing a song once on my acoustic, and he said,it sounds like it...

Re: Mexican Stratocaster vs American

I have a Mexican Strat and love it,but it fails to live up to a grade A American Strat. The pickups are tinny on my MIM Strat, but love the neck and frets. I bought mine in 2000 for $200,and the best $200 I ever spent.

Re: Alternate Tunings- What Do You Use and Why?

Open G is my favorite for slide. For most parts I'll use a drop D tuning,I like the extra bass and the chords isn't that much different.

Re: What is your capo for?

I use a capo pretty often.I only use them on my acoustics, never on my electrics.I tune all my acoustics down a 1/2 step down.If I play with other players,I'll capo it on the first fret. All the other times I use it to sing with or if the song I know requires one.Phil Keaggy uses two of them on one so...
