Re: Why do banjos have a dot at the 10th fret?

Bouzoukis also have a dot at the 10th fret. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bouzouki#mediaviewer/File:Bouzouki_tetrachordo.jpg The bouzouki evolved from the baglama, which often have evenly spaced dots. It's just that the frets are unevenly spaced... http://www.saz-hamburg.de/media/catalog/product/cach...

Why do banjos have a dot at the 10th fret?

I have done my due diligence at googling this, so I'll just come out and ask it. Here's my working theory: There are natural harmonics at frets 12, 7, & 5, so marking those is a good starting point. Guitars have a dot at the 9th fret because it looks nice. There is a node there as well, so it all ma...

Re: Sleep Walk - looking for criticism

OK that's good news. If the biggest issues are timing and legato - at least those are things I know how to work on. (basic musicianship) BTW that's played with a slide. The notes are getting cut off not from lifting the slide but from damping too early. I guess for the listener that's a distinction ...

Sleep Walk - looking for criticism

A couple years ago I tried to take up slide, but I got frustrated (and busy) and gave up. I gave it another try and got a little further this time. If you have a few minutes, please give a listen to Sleep Walk. http://www.reverbnation.com/imadirtytroll/ It's based on the Chantay's arrangement. (whic...

Re: Rocksmith is out today!

The USB converter seems to be pretty good for picking up single notes but pretty crappy for chords. Also the timing is very forgiving, especially with chords. Another pet peeve is that it takes over a minute to start the game and sign in. Some of the transcriptions are... unusual... but you'll find ...

Re: Rocksmith is out today!

I don't know if it's the learning tool of the future, but I'm having more fun with it, and I think I'm learning a little bit on the side. So if it gets me to play a little more I think it's worth the price. A professional will laugh at it of course. The cable that converts the analog signal to USB i...

picking the right string

I'm an intermediate level player, but I must have skipped a beginner lesson somewhere. I'm learning to sing while playing, i.e. sing the melody and then throw in little improvised guitar licks during gaps between vocal phrases. I'm not the world's best at it, but it's coming along - sometimes I can ...

Re: vintage GAS

I did a little research, looks like it's the model in the center http://www.vintageguitars.org.uk/gib66p12.php but I prefer this type of toggle switch. (maybe it's really a different year?) http://www.blueskyguitars.com/images/66_firebird.jpg Also I found an interview online, he actually used a stra...

GAS - I think - Boss JS-8 eBand

This thing looks pretty interesting, anyone tried one? Also thinking about POD or Fender GDEC. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PkN_-Wt0IIY Each of these devices has so many features, unless you work in a music store there's no way you could make an informed choice. And a lot of features never get use...

Re: coil tapping experiment

[reviving an old thread] OK, after over a year of experimenting, I tried a few different configurations. I finally settled on the "Jimmy Page" setup. It's popular for a reason. I got a prewired harness and had a guitar tech install it. http://cgi.ebay.com/Jimmy-Page-wiring-harness-THIS-DOES-EVERYTHI...

Only suggestion - "Tre mil från stan" would sound good with drums.

Re: Check out my cover.. any tips and advice? maroon 5?

you can play, but I need more enthusiasm. in my opinion, songs are best when performed not just played. +1 you look bored. Of course you're playing and singing at the same time which is something I can't do at all... not a bad performance. I'm not familiar with the song, adding a backing track migh...

Re: I'll Be Home For Christmas - baritone

That was cool, somehow I didn't get around to it till now. Must be a B-B baritone? I thought about getting one of those but I ran out of space in my closet.
