Re: What type of music do you play?

Light classic rock, pop. I'm a lazy cowboy-chords rhythm player, so any song I like that fits into those parameters is fair game.

Re: Having trouble with Em7 and F chords

Learn to make the E maj shape with your middle (2) and ring (3) fingers and pinky (4), then put down your index finger to barre. It works that way for the Am shape barre chords also (e.g. Bm, Cm), and Em shapes (Fm, Gm, etc. fingers 2,3 then barre). It takes some getting used to because most people ...

Re: Power Chords

dhodge gave you a great answer. Another thing I'd like to point out is that they're incredibly easy--if you play in dropped tuning like drop D (bottom string tuned down to D instead of E), you can play them with just one finger. You can play whole songs that way. Yep, both points above... great ans...

Re: strumming without plectrum

After almost 7 years since I picked up a guitar seriously I still can't hold a pick. Thumb with the nail a little longer gives a decent sound. It's also possible to play individual notes with it. Travis picking ala Dust in the Wind is just fingers.

Re: one finger barre chord ?

Play G B C B Bb A as

Code: Select all

--3--x--x--x--x--x--
--0--4--5--4--3--2--
--0--4--5--4--3--2--
--0--4--5--4--3--2--
--2--x--x--x--x--0--
--3--x--x--x--x--x--
and see what happens.

Hint... it was a big hit; he died at 26 years old. :(

Re: What to do with the song?

Thanks guys. I haven't been on line, so I'm just seeing the new suggestions now. Both of which I like. You know, I saw that tab but didn't give it any thought because to play it with the recording it needs to be capoed. I didn't think outside the box. Or I just transpose it on the UG page. But that'...

Re: What to do with the song?

Thanks David, good-eye-deer. You're right that the melody drives the chords changes. I think that's what I hear on the surface. It seems to be a pretty multi-layered track, so the basic rhythm guitar may be buried.

Yes Helgi, I'm using open chords. Barre chords is a good idea. Thanks.

Re: What to do with the song?

Thanks Nuno. The "in very many ways" line gets 1 beat per chord I think. I've done that in other songs. When they're fast, you do have to slow down just to get the change ingrained in your head and fingers.

What to do with the song?

The song is I Don't Know How to Love Him from Jesus Christ Superstar. There are very fast chord changes, sometimes on every syllable in a word. Is it something to live with or is there something like staying on the previous chord for a longer duration? I can't get the strumming right either. I've be...

Re: What song are you learning right now?

I've got a couple of irons in the fire. I just did Some Kind of Wonderful, Grand Funk Railroad; Tightrope, Leon Russell; It Never Rains in Southern California and a some other 70s songs. I'm experimenting with drop D and power chords for some songs I think they'll work nicely with... Jackie Blue, Oz...

Re: Anyone here use a slide on their middle finger?

I see this thread is old, but it's relevant to me because I'm just getting into using drop D for one-finger power chords. I slide them up and down the neck. I was wondering how a slide would work for this. Because my middle finger is the strongest and longest, I would use the slide there. But if I w...

Re: Fun with drop D and power chords

I might also try open D. That would probably give a fatter sound than drop D 5th chords for majors. I know open D is all majors; I think minors are a problem in open D, though. I saw a YT video on how to make them. For minors in open D I think I'd stick to 5th chords.
