Re: I'm buying a new guitar and I need help!

Hi guys. I know there are probably many of these topics, but, I am planning on buying a new guitar, and I think I need help. ... I have decided on either, a Fender MIM Stratocaster, a MIM Telecaster, an Epiphone Dot, or I can probably get a really good deal on a Fender Jaguar. ... I was leaning tow...

Re: The dreaded barred chords...

I practised the E-shape barre chords using the little progression in the tune I posted about here:

I'm still not great at them, but I think it helped.

Re: not playing the guitar at the moment can you help?

I'll just listen to some inspiring sounds for now. Someone should start a thread about the music that inspires them; I've been thinking a lot about that recently :) Another thing you could do - whilst listening to inspiring sounds :) - read up on some of the theory articles (there are some good one...

Re: How long have you been playing ?

I "played" bass for about 4 weeks, leading up to a gig, back in 1995.
I've been learning/playing guitar since August 2008 - so 13 months so far!

Re: Buying a beginners' guitar

Hey, When I was shopping around for my first acoustic, just over a year ago, I made a list of some supposedly good guitars. This was cribbed from various guitar forums, and so on. Anyhow, I came up with this: Sub £150 Vintage V300, V400 Cort Earth 70, Earth 72 Sub £200 Cort Earth 100, Earth 100R, ...

Re: Redundancy and Music - an update

Hi Alan, Even though I've not posted that much on GN (yet!), I've read a lot of your helpful replies on other threads, so had to pop on and wish a massive Good Luck! with your teaching venture. And also thanks for the interview, that was a good read. I've just tracked down your HereIsTheCity article...

This page also explains the differences between these effects (and many more): http://users.sa.chariot.net.au/~gmarts/fx-desc.htm Or for a slightly less technical description of different effects: http://musicgearcompany.wordpress.com/2009/01/23/guitar-effects-pedals-monkey-explains-it-all/ What a ...

Re: Advice for beginner on GarageBand or similar?

There's a really basic one on the Apple website I've just found - here Although that seems to skip the bit about needing some kind of actual recording device (e.g. microphone!) that will connect to your Mac (e.g. external sound card?) Does that help? I did mess around with recording my acoustic just...

Re: Am I Stupid? PC Help Pls

It's probably not relevant, bit of a long shot, but a problem I have with attaching other drives (USB sticks, my mobile phone, whatever) is that I use too many drive letter mappings in Windows. Namely on my work PC, it's not that bad a setup at home. So, my desktop has the usual C: drive, but also a...

Re: New Fender Jaguar/Jazzmaster?

Hmmmmm, Jaguar...! I just recently got my first electric, and that's what I got; see this thread.

If you do get a chance, try a head-to-head of the humbucker version against the single coil.

And apparently, you have to post photos if you get it

Re: Figuring out chords - River Guard by Smog / Bill Callahan

I guess you could play it like the Tab on top but wouldn't it be A - G - Bm ( it says C# up there )? Edit: I just looked at the tab again O_O thats the Bm shape o.o guess u put C#m by mistake Ah, yes, copy'n'paste failure there. So really it's now this: A G Bm E:--5------3------2--- B:--5------3---...

Re: Figuring out chords - River Guard by Smog / Bill Callahan

Yes, right shapes - but his guitar is tuned a whole tone lower than standard - so he's actually playing A-G-Bm Brilliant, thanks! That'll teach me to try and figure it out, watch some TV, and then go back to playing it without watching the vid again. So, I could re-arrange that as: A G C#m E:--5---...

Figuring out chords - River Guard by Smog / Bill Callahan

I was watching Bill Callahan's Black Cab Session version of his song River Guard , and wondered if I could figure out the chords to this simple-seeming, but beautiful, song. Here's what I reckon the 3 chords are: B A C#m E:--7------5------4--- B:--7------5------5--- G:--6------6------6--- D:--9-----...

Re: Seasick Steve Live last night

I found a couple of cool videos of Seasick Steve on a French website called La Blogotheque . I can't read the French, but basically they get Steve to play some songs "out and about" in Paris, almost as if busking. That seems to be the general idea with all that website's "sessions", in fact 8) Oh, a...
