Re: Barre Concern

This is one of those things that only practice can really take care of- assuming that you're using proper technique, of course. If the barre in particular is your hang-up, try fretting ONLY the barre and making sure all the strings ring out before adding the other fingers to the chord shape. Just ke...

Re: thumbs up for Taylor Road Show

+1 to the Taylor guys. I met a bunch of them, as well as Bob at the 2008 NAMM show. They're really kind, knowledgeable and stand behind what they do.

I'm a big Taylor fan, I just wish they weren't so gosh-darned expensive.

Re: Flat Wound Strings

It's been a while since I used flats on guitar, but that's all I use on my bass. I love the feel and the mellowed out tone the flats give you.

Re: Changing gauges- 13s to 10s. Possible?

very likely depending on how well the guitar was set up in the first place. The major factors will be greatly reduced tension on the neck and the size of the nut slots. With those two factors combined, you may end up with some extra fret noise. But you never know, if it's set up poorly for 13s, the ...

Re: Come Together

Same notes, different place on the neck- that's what makes the guitar one of the most useful/confusing instruments to play. Playing this way is fine, although when using open strings you'll need to use some different right hand techniques to get the same sounds you would from fretted notes. Keep pra...

Re: Matching hands to guitar?

There are definitely different shapes, sizes, scale lengths of guitar. Finding one that is comfortable for you is a good idea, but I think you'll find over time, your fingers will get used to doing new things and will gradually become stronger and more flexible.

Good luck- and most of all- have fun!

Re: Question: What Key is "Bella" by Santana in?

I'm not familiar with the tune, but by taking a look at the notes in the intro, and knowing Santana's frequent use of minor-key flavors, I'm going to guess Amin, or A Dorian. At least that's what the transcription would seem to indicate. If I get a chance to listen to it soon I'll repost with some m...

Re: Sweet Spot vs Cranking To 10?

It's funny this discussion should pop up; I've been playing a lot with a "gearless" setup. I figure the less I have to carry to a gig, the less that can break (including my back). I've found a great amp that has some very touch sensitive overdrive and have been able to sweep my volume pots from clea...

+1 to gnease. Capos are a great tool, not a crutch. Learning different chord voicings is a key to understanding the guitar and being a complete player.

Indaba Music

I thought this might go in the online jams and collaborations section, but there seemed to be precious few active threads there. So anyway, a friend just turned me on to indabamusic.com. It's an online music collaboration site that allows you to upload and mix individual tracks from users all over t...

Re: The "real" chords

All chords have their purpose in music- Power chords give you that great big sound with just a few notes, "Standard" chord voicings give you harmony and movement through the key centers, and extended chords with tensions can be used to the same effect with greater color. One thing that I've found la...

Re: i need a new amp

You can't beat playing through whatever you can find at your local shops. I like Fender amps, personally, but I'm boycotting them now thanks to their unwarranted and ill-timed price hikes. There are some great small amps made my Kustom that might be in your price range. Of course, if you're looking ...
