Re: An overcomplicated lightbulb

Ah, you've reached another milestone in your playing. Don't you just love when something new clicks? Some "ah-ha" moments take longer than others, but man it never gets old. Congrats!

Your best practice/playing

I've been thinking about whether or not there is a "better" time during the day to play/practice guitar or not. Or maybe even that there are certain times better suited for playing and other times better suited for practicing. For example, I find that the first couple hours after I wake are NOT the ...

Re: Make guitar picks out of credit cards

I guess it's true there is a sucker born everyday, someone might buy it but why? The same reason someone might want to make his own guitar: For fun. The value from the product isn't in that you get FREE picks. It's from the fact that you are making your own pick out of whatever you have lying aroun...

Re: How important are scales?

My take on it is that you can master both English and music without ever studying the rules. Yet ignorance is clearly never any kind of advantage. Knowing how to read English has been a great gift, and so has being able to read standard notation for music - it's a massive asset. So has understandin...

Re: How important are scales?

The thing is, they are music. Knowing how to play music is a different beast from just playing the guitar. Can you explain that a little? Going up and down a scale is music to you? I don't think you meant to be sarcastic although it kind of came across that way, so here's a bit of expansion. Music ...

Re: Make guitar picks out of credit cards

Chris, two years ago I met the guy who invented the Jellyfish pick - we were both judges for Guitar Center's King of the Blues competition. Nice guy. He's got a degree in music composition (besides an engineering background). I've also gone through at least dozens, if not hundreds, of pick experime...

Re: Learning/Remembering New songs

I write a list of tasks weekly and I include songs that already know in that list to maintain them in memory. So, I play each song every X weeks. I am doing it in the last few months and it seems it works. Also, if the song is more or less complex (many jazz standards) I try to analyze the chords l...

Re: Learning/Remembering New songs

I started listening to music after the first set of tubes in my ears back around 1970 or so. I heard music and muffled singing. I got into the bad habit of listening to the melody, not the song. The ears had more work on them and eventually was left to higher powers just how long a cold was going t...

Re: Neat little online guitar tuner

That's the thing, i have a little tuner that attaches to the guitar, but it uses those little tiny batteries. If it ever dies on me, it's good to know I won't have to play out of tune. Or if you're traveling, that's one less thing to carry. Something to keep in mind I guess.

Re: Make guitar picks out of credit cards

Haha, I'm digging the responses.

I actually thought people would appreciate this device. Guess not. I myself have never made my own picks, but i thought this would be a good way to experiment with whatever you have around the house, and do it quickly. To each his own.

Make guitar picks out of credit cards

I was checking out I Heart Guitar recently and I found this thing http://iheartguitarblog.com/2011/04/pickmaster.html Now, I had never even considered doing anything like that, but after thinking about it - It's genius! All it is really is a hole puncher with a pick-shaped hole. Such a simple idea. ...

Re: Learning/Remembering New songs

Yea, that's actually what kept me going for the first few years, composing and coming up with my own stuff. Because at the time, I was clueless about how to go about learning guitar and wanted to learn everything at once. So needless to say, i didn't get very far. But despite the frustration, the li...

Neat little online guitar tuner

Hey guys, Not sure if this has been brought up before, but yesterday I found this really useful online guitar tuner. And it's NOT the kind that just plays a tone but you still have to tune it yourself by using your ear. This one actually works like a regular electronic tuner and you just need flash ...
