The thing I might recommend to you about your gear change/upgrade would be to try a few guitars that are totally different from what you own. Like many, I started on a Fender Strat, playing it through a borrowed POS amp. Both were ultimately good enough to be played on the long term, however, I foun...

The mentor thing is a "gimme", no one can fully assess their own weaknesses. On a more helpful note, I would say that you attempt to view your own abilities as objectively as possible and see what really seems to be missing, even if the closest you can get is really vague, general type areas like "t...

Used music equipment is such a good deal, it's almost a scam (for the buyer) sometimes. Generally gear is getting sold because it's not getting any use, which means it's in great condition, and heck, even if it isn't, scratches, dents, dings, scrapes of all sorts don't make most instruments any wors...

At the age of 8, my accomplishment in life was that I was fairly good at Mario Bros. I could not yet consistently play jingle bells on the piano.

The DiMarzios are definitely the higher quality pickups, but the V7/8's are nothing to sneeze at either. Something else you might like is the DiMarzio Evolutions that Vai puts in his guitars. A very cool sound.

Not a "new" song, but one I always play if I tune down is Outshined by Soundgarden. Love that opening riff. Right on, actually makes good use of the drop D as well, as it's darn hard to change chords that fast without it. Plus you use the open D power chord as well. A couple other Soundgarden songs...

The guitar that will make you play the most is the guitar you should buy, absolutely. And it can't be said enough times: Absolutely do not buy any lower priced (<$500) without playing it. They vary so much from axe to axe, it's too much of a gamble. I actually played an Epi SG last week that I reall...

One acoustic, one electric, one bass. That is all.

Any more and I don't really bond as much, and I'm really into that man-guitar relationship.

Another thing to note is that every significant guitar, amp and effect maker has AT LEAST one active forum dedicated to the discussion of that particular piece of gear. Today, it's relatively easy to walk into your local music store knowing more about any one guitar than the entire sales staff. Ther...

My favorite way of manual tuning is simply pluck two strings open at once, like the open bass E and open A strings. This is an interval of a 4th. You just listen carefully. This is the only way I know how to describe it, but I just match up the vibrations. If you hear a wobble, they are out of tune...

It's what you plug into the wall to make your amp work, silly! ... Oh Chord got it! A power chord is a commonly used dyad that consists of the root of the chord and it's 5th. Guitarists often include the octave of the root note to add fullness to a chord. Typical power chord: e------ B------ G------...
