Re: Playing Along
What's the context here? Are they playing along with someone playing something they've never heard before or are they just playing along to a song on the radio? Can they do it for 3 - 5 tracks in a row or just one at a time
Prett...

Playing Along

So I've noticed many amateur guitar players who are able to "play along" with someone else or a tune on the stereo etc. I'd describe it as fills or short riffs, whatever the term is. I've asked them about it but they say it just comes to them or they play what seems right. This hasn't worked for me....

New(to me) G Chord Fingering

I picked up “Beginning Fingerstyle Blues Guitar” and am working through it. In the section on playing a “Blues in G” it recommends fingering the G chord with the 1st and 4th finger on the third fret of the low and high E string respectively. This just to me seems like an awkward fingering as I learn...

Root or Fifth First in Bass Strum Style?

I'm a bit confused on this as far as the first bass note to hit in a sequence. Some of the lessons show the root first then the strums, then the fifth, then the strums, other lessons are the other way around. I'm not sure whether to stick strictly to the root-fifth pattern and just use that everywhe...

Linking Dave Hodge's books and Lessons

Working into "Complete Idiot's Guide to Guitar" I'm noting lessons like "banana boat song" in the book leads nicely into the "Easy Songs for Beginners" "Folsom Prison Blues/Your Cheatin Heart" lesson And likewise for his introduction of blues rhythms in the book and "Before You Accuse Me" and "Kansa...

yet another thumb position question

So after 4 months away from my guitar, I decided to ditch the old death grip thumb over the neck style and go with the thumb behind the neck. Seems to be a positive thing, initially some wrist pain and heck of a time landing the chord in the right place but coming along pretty good. Sometimes I reve...

Re: Where to Discuss Complete Idiots Books Lessons Questions

I’m looking at Complete Idiots Blues 2, where you introduce the A7 B7 D7 etc into the exercise. Where I’m getting hung up is the bar where you switch from the A7 chord to the 2 note E chord on the E and A strings. Actually the hangup is the switch from the E chord to the first alternate D7 voicing. ...

Re: Learning Proper Left Hand Position

Chris: It looks like when you play the C and G your palm or at least the web between the thumb and index finger is contacting the neck and providing the resitance for the fretting fingers as opposed to the thumb doing it. Which is the way i was playing. Any problem with the palm contacting the high E?

Re: Learning Proper Left Hand Position

Wow, now I'm really conflicted! But, amazed(or maybe not) at the depth of insight and thought put into this discussion. Since I play only on acoustic, I've made a wee study the last week or so of other players I know or saw live. Seems the field is split but towards the more aggressive grip. Prevail...

Learning Proper Left Hand Position

So I've decided to follow the advice of just about everyone and relearn my left hand position from the “thumb over top neck in palm” deathgrip to the “ thumb in middle of neck” approach. I realize it will be a process of unlearning 4 years of bad habit. Basically I'm going back and working o...

Holding My Dreadnought

I have a Yamaha dreadnought that until recently I played sitting with the lower cutaway resting on my right thigh. I don't like using a strap, so found I was using my right arm and body to hold it in position. Also, the neck was basically parallel with the floor, so my left arm wrist angle was proba...

scales questions

When practicing a scale, should you keep fingers on the fret board after playing a note? For example, when playing a scale in “A” on the 6th string starting on frets 5, 7, 8, would you keep the fingers on the 5 when playing the 7, the 5 and 7 when playing the 8, and so on moving across the fretb...

Would that not be noticed on all strings? It's just the "A"

A string sounds wrong

Last week I changed the strings on my Yamaha acoustic, gave frets and fretboard a light cleaning with steel wool, put on same gauge strings, except the new were D'addario Phosphor Bronze, the old were D'addario XL Life. Now the A string has this strange tone even though by ear or electronic tuner it...
