Re: Friendly guitar stores in New York?

Well, we got back from New York this morning. What a city! Had a great time doing all the touristy' things and on Saturday when we were walking back from the Brooklyn Bridge we came across J&R Music World on Park Row. Cath wanted a sit down, so we went in there hoping I could play a few acoustics. H...

Friendly guitar stores in New York?

I turned 40 recently  and my fabulous wife has bought me (us!) a weekend in New York next April. So, in between a cycle tour in Central Park, a ride on the Staten island ferry and back, a look from the top of the Rockerfella(sp?) Center, seeing Ground Zero and an evening in the 'Living Room',...

Re: How do you get a percussive sound when strumming?

Thanks for the replies. I can do 'okay' at best with lightening the load on a barre chord, but I can't get anywhere with 'palm muting'. More practice required I guess. Had a poor guitar week last week, didn't pick it up that much and when I did it was just poor. In a bit of a rut at the moment. I am...

How do you get a percussive sound when strumming?

Hi all, long time since I posted, but I am still a regular visitor..... Anyway, if you take a look at this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KvypHGNt4fU&p=5F154575412D5F01&playnext=1&index=28 the guy has a percussive strum which I just can't get. Can someone try and talk me through the technique...

Re: I Quit Smoking

This helped me, but may not help anyone else....You aren't craving a ciggie, there is a little monster inside you that is. He lives on nicotine and each craving you have is just him squealing while he dies. So don't feel bad about the cravings, feel good about them and think "thats right you little ...

Re: How fussy are you with fingering?

Thanks Noteboat, I'm going to print your post and add it to Greybeards two that I have put in my tabs/stuff folder, so now and again I will find those pages and have a practice.

So much great learning material, so little time!

Re: How fussy are you with fingering?

Nice thread Chris & co as I am currently struggling with this issue. My main problem is to do with the G as Noteboat said, to move from G to G7 I have to completely re-fret rather than just swap two fingers. I'm getting pretty quick at this, in that it doesn't cause me any problems, so I have been l...

Re: Folk Guitar

Theres a lot of great guitars around for that money, so it would be good to know more about what you like, what you have now and so on. Having said that, this guitar looks like a lot of guitar for the money: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Epiphone-Masterbilt-EF-500RCCE-Fingerstyle-Acoustic-Electric-Gui...

Re: Can I Be Taught To Change Chords?

Some great replies here (as usual) so at the risk of confusing you some more, heres my thoughts.... Get a strumming pattern you are happy with (D, DU, UDU seemed to click with me), then practice 'easier' changes first. For example, Em to E (just add a finger). Or Am to E (just move all fingers up a ...

Re: How Music Works

I caught some of this on Chanel 4 last year and actually asked my wife to get it on DVD for me for my birthday, which of course she couldn't, so a massive thanks for posting this. I will have a good watch over the coming weeks. As someone else has said though, what a good presenter - I think I could...
