Re: Y12 W20 - This Week's Topic.

Well, Vic, this is quite appropriate timing  We are heading out of town for at least 4 or 5 days because of smoke problems in our area. http://bangkok.coconuts.co/2014/03/18/thousands-ordered-evacuate-toxic-smoke-spreads-east-bangkok The school I teach at and live next door to just cancelled c...

Great stuff Neil. Your upbeat and catchy music and singing suited the subject well and made the gentle humour really effective. I hope you'll be singing it to wider audiences. :D

Re: SSG11-Week24 My Two Cents - mp3

Thanks very much Paul. I thoroughly enjoyed your video. :D I'm busy with other projects right now, but I'll add one of those to the list. Twenty-five years ago I built my own house and I still have all the tools and equipment that I used. So cutting those panels and pieces to size should be no probl...

Chris,
all the backing is done by playing the acoustic guitar, bass and Cajon.
Thanks for the info. I'm impressed. I had to Google "Cajon" though, and now I have to resist the tempration to buy yet another toy!....

Re: SSG11 Week 24 $5 Coffee (mp3)

A well told story and I also liked the build from the individual to the company to the country. However, I noticed that the title "five dollar coffee" never appears in the lyrics. I think it should show up at least once. Even better if there's also a reference to it later in the song to tie things ...

Re: SSG11-Week24 My Two Cents - mp3

I really enjoyed the playing and singing, Paul. Great job. :D How do you do the backing? Is it just you playing, or is it augmented in some way? Very well presented anyway. I always struggle with getting a half-way decent sounding musical accompaniment. so I know, all too well, that it's not easy to...

Re: 11/23 Guilty As Sin - Added MP3 4/16

Nice sound on the instruments and vocals. :D .....so on the listen the song has a whimsical, laid back "don't take life (or death) too seriously" attitude +1 I just played it and, again, my wife also heard it (without knowing any of the backstory you collected, or the history of your various versio...

Re: Y11W24 - What It's Worth

How true and what a great idea for a song. :) +1 :) Another good song Neil. I had no idea that the US still issued pennies. Australia stopped using one and two cent coins way back in 1992. Since then our smallest denomination coin is a 5c piece. Apparently the cost of making them was a factor, and ...

Re: 11/23 Guilty As Sin

Hi MrE The re-writes look good. Tighter, punchier and more effective. I like the verses individually too. But, as James mentions, you still seem not quite sure yet on which angle you're most attracted to. Unlike what often happens to a songwriter - not quite enough strong material and good ideas - i...

Re: SSG11-Week24 My Two Cents

Hi Paul, I liked your idea of a commentary on the commercialisation of the news. Good strong first verse too. I remember those early newsreaders as being exactly as you've painted them. All terrribly BBC back in the day... Now, as you say, it seems like just another chunk of data to package and sell...

Re: SSG11-Week24 Nickels & Dimes

This is my 3rd attempt in a row [My Barong, The Special and this] with Pat Pattison's method of songwriting [Lyrics first]. He says you should try it for at least 10 songs before it starts feeling comfortable. The up side is there is very little room for writer's block b/c it's a very clear step by...

Re: SSG11 Week 24 $5 Coffee (mp3)

Thank you both very much for listening. It's not always easy to listen to someone like me grinding through their own compositions, because we've all become so used to hearing highly polished slick commercial recordings, and the habit of more casual home music making has sadly suffered such a decline...

Re: SSG11-Week24 Nickels & Dimes

Hi James, Another fine fast composition from you. I liked the way you built the theme up to the clever punchline - which I hadn't guessed or anticipated. I'm currently sitting at a computer in the bedroom and Vicki is sitting up in bed reading. I played it out loud (quite good speakers) without spec...

Re: SSG11 Week 24 $5 Coffee (mp3)

Very topical. I liked how you included the IMF. Some of the rhymes seem a bit rough but overall, I like it. Thanks MrE. :) Yes, you're spot on with the rough rhymes but my excuse is that it was deliberate this time. I usually write rather wordy songs with very neat rhyming schemes, a bit of word pl...

SSG11 Week 24 $5 Coffee (mp3)

This probably does wander a little bit from the original brief - but it definitely started with the story of a $5 coffee! We don't get much street begging where I live, but in past years you might occasionally get approached by somebody politely asking if you could spare a dollar for a coffee. Some ...
