Re: Newb Dilemma

IMHO the Epiphone is about 90% as good as the comparable Gibson model at a significantly lower price. I have a Gibson ES-330 and an Epiphone Casino - basically the same guitar - and that's my take anyway. However, if you plan on reselling it down the road, the Gibson will hold more of it's value. Yo...

Re: Acoustic or electric guitar for a beginner?

You should be fine as long as you are having fun. Remember, they call what we do playing music. Sure there are skills you have to learn, but you have to learn skills to play baseball too. The fundamentals you are learning now will lead to instant gratification later on when they get under your finge...

Re: Learning Guitar Difficulties

While tabs are convenient, they are no substitute for learning to read regular music notation. Music notation is the lingua franca of the entire musical world. By learning tab only, you shut yourself out of this world. IMHO anyone who calls himself or herself a musician should learn to read music. I...

Re: Learning Guitar Difficulties

I think if you ask 50 people you will get at least 49 different answers because we are all different. I play 7 instruments and for me the most difficult thing about learning the guitar was relating the string/fret position to a note name while reading music. The piano keyboard is more visual, and th...

Re: Acoustic or electric guitar for a beginner?

Another option to confuse the issue. If electric is easier for your hands, you can get a pedal that will emulate a decent acoustic sound. My Digitech RP355 has a couple of acoustic emulations that sound perhaps 90-95% like an acoustic, but since the guitar I use is an electric, I can still get elect...

Re: Gibson or Strat

Get a Parker DF522NN (for Notes Norton) and you get a guitar that can sound much like a Strat and much like a Les Paul plus it has P90s and a piezo under the bridge too!

(note: this is not spam -- I get no money from Parker and paid full retail for mine)

Re: How many bands have you been in?

I agree, a good wife will pull no punches, but land them as gently as you need. But she should tell them to you, not the other band members. Then you can address the problem with the band. Depending on the other band members, it would be OK to say something like, "My wife called my attention to this...

Re: Guitar Pick Question

I use nothing by Fender Medium white colored picks. Being predominantly a sax/flute/wind synth player who doubles on guitar, I'm not experienced enough to know the gentle nuances of different picks. So I pick Fender Medium because they are very consistent. They all feel the same and familiar to my h...

Re: How many bands have you been in?

Definitely , wives and girlfriends that are not band members should stay out of the band's business. If there is a girl in the band, same goes for her mate. And if there is an unattached member of the opposite sex in the band, the rule should be, "Hands off". In the bands I've been in with one fema...

Re: How many bands have you been in?

I remember reading an article about Count Basie a loooooooong time ago. It mentioned that Mr. Basie used to take attitude over talent. As long as the player was adequate, he would take a lesser player over a more talented player with a bad attitude. And I've seen that in bands I've been in. Some peo...
