Hmm, okay, I'll try replacing the preamp tubes and take it from there.

A new used Squier strat

A Korean made Pro Tone. Just a nice basic, decent quality strat. :)

My Blues Jr

It just sounds bad, almost harsh no matter what setting or guitar I use. I can't tell if this is because what I want in an amp has changed or could it be just the tubes? I was listening to a bunch of other amps in the store, listening for a more Dire Straits sound, but that shouldn't make me dislike...

Thanks! I'll have to keep my eyes open for the amp then. I hope they aren't too expensive up here.

The Roland is better than the amps in most starter packs. Personally I found all of the amps in that size range unsatisfactory. The 30watt version was the absolute minimum for me, but everyone's hearing is somewhat different.

Buy a chromatic tuner and perhaps a metronome with a steady tone. In my experience, pitch pipes are practically useless.

Well everything Fender does is a marketing strategy, but i wouldn't let that stop you. Make sure you compare it to other teles in the store, through a couple of different amps. I played one standard American in the store a few months ago and it was resonant and 'alive' in a way that I've rarely hear...

I did some poking around 'titan' is listed at harmony-central, though not sure if I entirely trust the reviews there. If I was going to buy a cheap guitar online for modding I'd take mikespe's recommendation and order from http://www.rondomusic.net/electricguitar.html the owner has a good reputation...

Epi, Rondo (although cross border ordering is always a bit of a pain)

If you aren't too hung up on the LP, take a look at Godin's LG series. Not exactly the same, but better value for money (especially in Canada).

Mathais, how are you playing the G? 210003 (send first and third fingers- not thumb) works much better for small hands. or if need be play a G7 while slowly working up to the G. I've found that after a couple of years playing 320001 is now merely very difficult but not completely impossible the way ...

Any reputable guitar store will let you try out the guitar first. Prefereably one of the salemen will play a few for you so you can listen. Things to look for include the height of the strings off the fretboard and whether the neck is straight (with a slight bow in it). But it takes a while to devel...

I see Godin is listed on some of the UK sites, so you might be able to try one of these out http://www.godinguitars.com/godinfreewayclassicp.htm I tried one at the store and it's very nice, actually almost all of the Godin's I've picked up have been really nice. It's been a long time since I've trie...

Judging from Harmony-central sometime around 2003. The squier m-series is usually faily good though I hadn't seen the LP version before.
