Re: Ear vs Eyes

Crow, I don't doubt that the medium is capable of producing great works. But the composers you mention are hardly non-readers: Stockhausen was trained at the Cologne Conservatory, Varese at the Paris Conservatory, Riley at the San Francisco Conservatory... Babbitt studied music at New York Universi...

Re: Ear vs Eyes

Seems to me there is no reason an "electronic" composer, presumably a non-reader, couldn't create a major work with the complexity, subtlety and sheer smarts of "Petrouchka" or Beethoven's Fifth Symphony or whatever. Some of the really early "electronic" stuff (using the term very broadly) is very s...

Re: Ear vs Eyes

well, noteboat, you picked out a relatively specific subset of musicians. That's what we're all doing... ...but when it comes down to my reality... Right. YOU, sir, are a specific subset of musicians. There is no way to generalize a yes/no answer to the original question. Here's MY reality: If I ha...

Re: The difference between a guitar player and a musician.

So maybe someone doesn't know which note they are playing at a specific moment...... I actually can still do that and I know the know how of which notes are which... So can I, and I love playing with intuitive players, if they are really intuitive and not just wankers. It's easy to say, "I play wha...

Re: The difference between a guitar player and a musician.

Lets not forget speedy passages in classical music which I'm sure ALL of the people objecting to shredding here accept. We "accept" stuff in context. Does it make musical sense? If it doesn't immediately make sense, it might be garbage, or it might be a masterpiece. Only time can tell. Does it have...

Re: The difference between a guitar player and a musician.

A jazz saxophonist plays a flurry of notes and its called bebop (sometimes even art) A guitarist plays a flurry of notes and its called showing off (sometimes even shredding) This is a good comparison. Bop players in general are choosing notes based on more complex chords than shredders. I'm...

Re: Help needed! Which guitar is this?? Custom Gibson??

Sorry, let me try this again....

SOUND and FEEL are all that really matter musically. As Frank Zappa said, if you pick up the instrument and it says, "Take me, I'm yours," you are home free.

If you're buying for investment potential, you're on you're own.

Re: Help needed! Which guitar is this?? Custom Gibson??

Could be any one of a bunch; but don't buy on looks, buy on sound and feel. This is not an answer to the question and besides , if I'm buying a guitar I am very concerned with the way it looks and so , I bet , are you if you were the one buying a guitar . If you don't have an answer to a post consi...

Re: The difference between a guitar player and a musician.

"Work" is a loaded word. For me, "work" in a musical sense means we have stuff we have to do, as a group, at some kind of basic level of competence, to accomplish the task at hand. Beyond that, it's all gravy. Do the work first, then have fun. "Shred" is a loaded word, as well. How do we define that...

Re: Finally getting a tube amp

Little, ancient, 5-watt fake Champs are absolutely killer. There are tons of them out there by all kinds of companies. Nothing to 'em -- three tubes, one knob and a crappy speaker which is easily replaced. They're easy to service, should it come to that, but it probably won't, unless you want to put...

Re: Choosing Rhythm

Just to make this more interesting... let's separate "rhythm" from "time." Just because you can keep 16th notes going at a consistent pace doesn't make your a rhythm champion. Rhythm is more than timekeeping . Timekeeping makes you a competent musician. A sense of rhythm... man, it's hard to talk ab...

Re: The difference between a guitar player and a musician.

(I have the flu and mixed meds with Rum) You, sir or ma'am, are my kind of guy. :D The value of knowing a few things about music other than just how to make your fingers go real fast on a fretboard are obvious. And that, I think, is the essence of what we're talking about when we talk about the dif...
