Re: Mandolin tuning

You might want to look into Robert Fripp's "new standard tuning" for guitar (CGDAEG). Why Crow....what does that have to do with mando or violin tuning. I've played lots of weird tunings throughout the years.....I don't see the connection. I used to play tunes, some Hedges & Kottke (who is more tra...

Re: Mandolin tuning

Thank You for explaining it further Note Boat.
I did learn a bit about "Meantone" from a Berkley dude.

Still the question regarding mandolin tuning on a 5 string, would it work, is it worth wild or should I stick to G?

Re: Mandolin tuning

Thanks Noteboat......actually I am interested, if you care to continue....
That's what makes DADGAD so Gregorian.....all those 5ths.
I'm still gonna try it on 5 string for S's & G's......eventually.

Mandolin tuning

I find it odd, that is the opposite of guitar tuning; E-A-D-G....& mando is G-D-A-E.
I was considering trying a mandolin type tuning for 5 string banjo...to fit in with that crowd...
Is this where our guitar tuning originated? History buffs?
I've never dubbed with this tuning before......

Re: Rocky Mountain Way - Joe Walsh - open G or open E?

I doubt that....when I play to it, it's in E. Big diff between D & E.
Easy to play in standard although he may play it in E.

Re: Is Anybody Gassin' for something?

Is GAS - guitar addicts syndrome? I really want this, have for years, kind of feel it is the holy grail of (modern) Stratocasters - it's something real special. http://www.electric-guitars-guide.com/images/fender-eric-johnson-stratocaster.jpg Eric Johnson sunburst, maple neck beauty. Ya a Martin D-28 or low priced Taylor that doesn't sound bad.......Guilda needs some fret work & a glue job.

Re: Practicing

I'm talking about incorporating standing tuning notes from the pentatonic box patterns into tunings....D, G....whatever tuning.
I do use standard for slide as well.

Practicing

Do any of you sliders out there incorporate standard pentatonic box scales into the mix or do you feel like you may as well play it standard if you do.
Personally, the more I have for my small arsenal the better. Mix em both together...

Re: amp for relaxing at home

My Vox DA5 has like 22 effects & is good for what it is....which is exact what I use it for...with headphones.
Runs on batteries too. $140 is what I paid for it at a local place......actually, this is second one I've had. The first one grew legs & ran for the hills apparently.
