Last night I went to a Hendrix Tribute Concert

Postby Kevin72790 » Fri Oct 19, 2007 9:54 am

It was incredible. You very rarely see so much talent one stage at once and god darn, what a fitting tribute it was to Jimi.

Performing was...

Drummer Mitch Mitchell (Hendrix Experience)
Guitarist Kenny Wayne Shepherd
Pedal Steel Guitarist Robert Randolph
Bassist Billy Cox (Band of Gypsys/JHE)
Guitarist Buddy Guy
Drummer Chris Layton (Double Trouble)
Bassist Tommy Shannon (Double Trouble)
Guitarist Mick Taylor (Rolling Stones)
Guitarist Hubert Sumlin (Muddy Waters)
Guitarist Eric Gales
Guitarist Andy Aledort
Guitarist Kenny Olson (Kid Rock)
Guitarist Doyle Bramhall
Singer Corey Glover (Living Colour)

Everyone was great really. Robert Randolph stunned me. He played Purple Haze on a god damned pedal steel guitar. And when him and Kenny Wayne Shepherd traded licks during Voodoo Child (Slight Return) it was just crazy. I met Billy Cox before the show and got his autograph, and God, he is the nicest guy. He said "that's some shirt you got there man." And he signed my shirt (unfortunately I forgot to bring the magazine I would have had him sign. I shook his hand, told him thanks for everything and I could tell he appreciated it. And during the show he was full of energy, just like he was back in 1970.

Kenny Wayne Shepherd was probably the best guitarist there, reminds me a lot of Stevie Ray Vaughan. Buddy Guy and Hubert Sumlin looked great for their age too, and played great.

The they played were... Foxey Lady, Voodoo Child (Slight Return), Voodoo Chile, Up From the Skies, Spanish Castle Magic, Purple Haze, I Don't Live Today, May This Be Love, Red House, Little Wing, You Got Me Floatin, Come On (Let the Good Times Roll), Mary Had a Little Lamb, Catfish Blues, Hoochie Coochie Man.

Anyways I'm not gonna ramble on.

Me before the show. I have an X on each of my hands because I'm under 21-

I obviously have a lot more but I gues that's enough. Yup. I suggest you go to a show if you can, Tickets are still available for the show in Providence, RI. Trust me, it's worth it. These guys put on one hell of a show.

Haha thanks man, yea I haven't been posting as much lately...and yea it was great seeing Billy Cox walk onto the stage with a shirt just like mine, lol. And yes Robert Randolph is great...I didn't think people could play a pedal steel guitar like that.

Thanks for the comment.

That is quite a shirt!

Agree about Robert Randolph.

Lot of other great players there, too!

I am jealous at so many different levels.

1- You got to see such a great show (I am very happy for you but lealous at same time!) To see all of those great muscians on one stage...WOW
2- You are under 21. Thanks man. Thanks for rubbing it in. :P
3- I wish I had a shirt like that!

1. Yea...in a way it's just hard to believe. I took a lot of pics, trying to get some of the guys together since you don't see that very often.
2. Lol.
3. You can buy one off of ebay. ;)

That show is coming to the Boston area tomorrow. As luck would have it, I'm flying out to Chicago for a few days. If I didn't have to go, I would definitely check out the show.

I was about to buy tickets for the Atlantic City show, when my mom found tickets for the apaprently sold-out one at the Beacon on monday. That's the show I am now going to :D :D

It's good to hear that the show is as good as I'm hoping it will be.
I'll definitely include pics after I go.

A quick question..how did you manage to get autographs from Bily Cox? Were you able to just walk up there? Or did you have special access or something? I would KILL for his autograph

Well at the Hampton Beach Casino in New Hampshire...there's a huge exit in the back. And a lot of the people came out of there, so someone like say Tommy Shannon walked out (I got his picture, not his autograph though)...and then I saw Billy Cox walk out and down the stairs with his wife.

I said "Hey Billy!" He said "that's some shirt you got there!" Then I said "Can I have your autograph?" He's like "of course" And I said, "can you sign my shirt?" (I would have had him sign this magazine...but I forgot it back home. So he signed it, and it was kinda funny, since he was having a hard time doing it I had to hold it down for him lol. I shook Billy Cox's hand, said thanks and goodbye.

Yep. That was it really. Here's a better pic of the shirt-

It's the same on the front and back, he signed the front.

Yea it was just awesome. I met Billy Cox...saw and awesome concert, it can't get much better than that.
