Y12 W13 - The Shredder (Need help w mp3)

The Sunday Songwriters club is a stretching exercise for your mind. Arpeggios for the brain cells, so to speak. After all, writing is like playing - to get better, you have to practice.

Y12 W13 - The Shredder (Need help w mp3)

Post by GrungeSunset » January 28th, 2014, 6:34 pm

They've held their ground.
Their village, they have defended.
Unfortunately it's all in vain
Because the time for games has ended

Born as Oroku Saki.
His start was a little rocky.
But he rose up the ranks of the foot clan.
Then proceeded to conquer all of Japan.
No one can best him, he is their better.
No one can defeat him, he is The Shredder!

He says he's done with the charades.
His foot ninja break through their blockades.
Gving ground, the defenders morale takes a dive.
As they hear the "None of you will leave here alive!"

Born as Oroku Saki.
His start was a little rocky.
But he rose up the ranks of the foot clan.
Then proceeded to conquer all of Japan.
No one can best him, he is their better.
No one can defeat him, he is The Shredder!

The villagers fall back to their keep.
They look over their dead and the weap.
Warriors looking around knowing it's their tomb.
He challenges them "Meet your destiny and your doom!"

Born as Oroku Saki.
His start was a little rocky.
But he rose up the ranks of the foot clan.
Then proceeded to conquer all of Japan.
No one can best him, he is their better.
No one can defeat him, he is The Shredder!

The battle is over, the scene is gritty.
He's crushed them all with no remorse or pity.
He sets his eyes on his next target, New York City

Hi GrungeSunset,

Seems fitting for a video game / metal opera.....I like the unexpected new assignment for the Shredder to go from Japanese village to NYC....but yes, I just googled and confirmed the only Shredder I heard of was from TMNT......turtle soup anyone? :P

Thanks for sharing.

One thing I love about the SSG is the constant element of surprise - one never knows who is going to turn up, either as a songwriter or as a topic of a song.

This is a lot of fun! Especially loved:
Warriors looking around knowing it's their tomb.
He challenges them "Meet your destiny and your doom!"
Do you have any ideas musically? There are so many different ways it could go!

Great to see you here again and looking forward to more.

Peace

One of the things I've always struggled with is getting the lyrics and the music to fit together. So I took James' idea and laid a few tracks down. I've tried singing over it but can't get a melody going. Not to mention trying to sing with a cold.

Does anyone have ideas for this particular song or advice on making this work in general?

Nice start. It reminds me a bit of one of my favorite instrumentals

As far as melody lines, steal from songs you like, but don't steal a whole section; just take a line from a song. Do this with a few songs and piece them together into a new song.

For this song in particular, I could imagine singing along the lines of Ronnie James Dio or Tenacious D

Any songwriting technique that works is a good one, but it seems to me that you've started at the end of the process for the music. What you have is good as accompaniment or an instrumental interlude. It's possible to find a tune that fits. I would normally start with a tune or sometimes start with a chord progression and find a tune in the chords. Only after I have the tune or most of it would I try to come up with some instrumentation to make it interesting.

That's what works for me. Take it for what it's worth.
