Y12W47 The Modal Verb Words (A Grammar Song)

The Sunday Songwriters club is a stretching exercise for your mind. Arpeggios for the brain cells, so to speak. After all, writing is like playing - to get better, you have to practice.

Y12W47 The Modal Verb Words (A Grammar Song)

http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=12921410

Can, could, may, might, would
Will, must, shall, should, ought to

The modal verbs are different from normal verbs
They don't use an 's' for the third person singular

He must, she may, he will, she might and she ought to
He would, she could, he shall and should, she can and she ought to

Can, could, may, might, would
Will, must, shall, should, ought to

The modal verbs are different from normal verbs
They make questions by inversion; just switch the words

Will he? He will. Must she? She must. Would he? Yes, he would.
Can she? She can. Might he? He might. Could she? Yes, she could.

Can, could, may, might, would
Will, must, shall, should, ought to

The modal verbs are different from normal verbs
The infinitive form of another verb follows directly
....but without the “to”

He can fly, she must drive, he would eat a cockroach pie
She may laugh, he might die, she will kiss a skunk good night

Can, could, may, might, would
Will, must, shall, should, ought to

James, it seems to me that if this song is to be used as a teaching tool, it's much too hard to memorize. Maybe some better rhyming would help. I don't know whether you were going for near rhymes with words like "verbs" and "singular."

Hi Renee,

Yes, I was thinking students would sing along looking at the lyrics, not memorizing....something like this

Yes, that works. I was focused more on the concepts, but looking for some sort of rhyming; although it definitely wasn't the top priority.

This is tricky business...trying to fit grammar points or rules in a song. I see other songs that are more examples of the rules...or the rules in action...and I've written like that as well....and I've seen some songs that are so rule heavy the music is just a distraction.....which this might be in that category.....

.....but in all experimenting....there probably is a niche market in there somewhere, because there is so much material and songs for kindergarten, but much less for upper grade levels.

Thanks for the listen and post :D

James
