Microphone for recording with ipod/iphone??

Post by s1120 » January 17th, 2012, 1:35 pm

OK, so I have been recording some of my pratices for a little over a year now, to keep track of stuff I have done, and so I can see how my skills have advanced. I use my Ipod touch, with a App called 4track. I realy like the program, its simple to use, but for now I have only been using the ipods built in Microphone. Now that Im improving, I want to record some of the songs Im working on to share with others. WIle the built in mic has worked fine so far, the quilty of its recording is pretty poor. SO, I guess my advancing skills deserve a gear upgrade. :D Does anyone know of a good microphone that works with Ipod/iphones? Not looking for one that pricy, and doesnt need to be top line... Im not going to be recording any hit songs any time soon... Just something mid pack, that will improve my recordings. Thanks for any help!

IK Multimedia seems to be the leader in this space. They have a Mic called the iRig Mic for $59.99:

It should work with your existing iOS app or it works with IK's apps as well.

The only downside I see to this is the use of the analog mic input vs. the dock connector's line in. For the next step up, you might consider something like this:

It is a bit more expensive at $79.99 retail, but it should be a higher quality capture. But, reading reviews, it appears to lack monitoring capability.

Unfortunately, there is no good, cheap option for a full-featured digital mic interface that supports "real" mics. This is an example of one, but it retails $399.00:

There are a lot of products out on the market for PCs/Mac that use USB for their interface. Unfortunately, they aren't compatible with iOS due in large part to Apple's proprietary dock connector.

Good luck. Let us know what you go with.

Thanks for the info!

Im in no way needing pro line stuff, so looks like that Irig mic might be perfect for me. Thanks

Post a review when you get it. I have their iRig guitar interface, and it is pretty fun to play with. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on the iRig Mic.

I just saw this press release. It looks like the iRig team at IK Multimedia noticed the lack of a cheap "real" mic interface:

$39.99 retail seems about the right price point.

I would go with an Apogee for top notch quality...I think they are about $200. But the Tascam stereo mic looked great for only $79 (I am an iOS recording fanatic....if you have questions, I've either owned it, tried it, or am currently using it!). ROCK ON!

OK, so over the months ive gotten better, and have a greater need for recording. Im sick of fighting "Hiss" from the internal mic on my Ipod, so I need smething better..

So does anyone see a downside of this one?
