Who is the best bass player ever? I think that Cliff Burton of Metallica. He is dead but I still listen to his bass solo a lot

Without any doubts whatsoever, I must say that in my opinion the best bassist (and not bass player) is Jaco Pastorius.

Victor Wooten is by far the greatest bass player of all time. ;D  If you think Flea rolling around with a bass is showmanship how about ending your solo with a standing back flip :o like Victor Wooten has done?  How about having the chop of a flamenco guitar god and turn them into bass.  Look up a song called A SHOW OF HANDS by Victor Wooten. ;)

To be a good bassist you don't need to be able to do standing back flips. You don't have to be able to play your bass while riding a bicycle and you don't have to dodge bullets while playing the bass, or play the bass while walking on a rope. Those are all circus acts, not music.

In short, a bass player is not a showman.

Same goes for any musician. Any one can practice and play the bass at a circus. But not anyone can practice and become a good bassist.
Probably the best musicians on this earth are fellows nobody ever notices. People who play whilst sitting on a stool and who concentrate on the music and not the rest.

Cheers...

there are too many to name. John Paul Jones-Led Zeppelin; Flea-RHCP; Cliff Burton-Metallica; so many, many more. It al depends on what you call a 'good' bassist

Hey fellas,  while u all make valid points about ur bass players, thier is the issue of whether we are defining good as-  someone who is flashy or someone who has the greatest musical knowledge.           while i have immense appreciation for the flashy guys who really liberate the bass as an instrument, i also respect the guys who have restraint and just lay it in the pocket nice and solid.    So in my personal opinion after considering these points im going to have to say that Jim Sellers of Stabbing Westward and Tim Commerford of audioslave are in my opinions two of musics best bassists

What kind of bass forum is this?

No one has said James Jamerson!!!  Are you kidding?  Should there even be a question in your mind?

Do a search for "the Funk Brothers" or get the dvd "Standing in the Shadows of Motown" and prepare to be educated.

I myself am surprised by the fact no one has yet mentioned the one and only BOOTSY COLLINS.
Although I still consider Jaco to be the one..

Historically speaking, the best bass player ever is officially Charles Mingus. He played double bass.

Hey everybody, ready for an uninformed opinion???????

I have to throw Geezer Butler's name into the mix, as I've done every time this topic comes up.  He is guy that made Black Sabbath the heaviest band in history, and I'm a guitarist who idolizes Tony Iommi, so that's especially high praise.  Just listening to his classic intro to NIB sends shivers down my spine every single time I listen to it.  He made the riffs epic, kept the balls behind the soloes, and is one of the most innovative bassists in the history of heavy metal.  He's also a pretty good lyricist, too.  A man of many talents.

Cheers,
Greg McNeish
