Whats the buzz ? (tell me whats happening) - FIXED

Post by pbee » June 17th, 2008, 10:44 pm

My bass has recently developed a buzzing sound. As long as I turn the tone right down its ok. But that just means that the buzz is being filtered. If I touch the strings then the buzz disappears. This makes me think that the problem is "ground" related. My plan is to replace the components 1 by 1 until the buzz goes away. Is it possible that the pick ups are the cause ? do they wear ? and what about the pots ? I removed the tone pot completely and no luck.
Any advise would be welcome here.

cheers
Paul

There should be an earth wire, going to the back of the bridge. It is possible that this has a broken contact.

Take a length of wire and put one end on the metal surround of the jack socket (which should be earth/ground) and the other onto the metal of the bridge. See if the buzzing disappears.
I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.
Did you know that the word "gullible" is not in any dictionary?

Yeah, that sounds about right. I have had the same problem with a guitar :D
Check out the ground wire to the jack?

I managed to fix my bass over the weekend. The main problem here was the lack of shielding. If you look at this photo bx12 you can see the grey paint which is supposed to be conductive but I don't believe that it is working. In fact if I put continuity meter across it, it doesn't register a connection. So my solution was to line the cavity with aluminium foil which is earthed by way of the base of the trim pots see this photo bx12 fixed. An interesting phenomena has now occurred. My bass appears to play more at the lower end than it did, before I used to back the high tones off and increase the lower tones on my amp now I do exactly the opposite, any ideas ? Mind you I may just be imagining the change I do find that when I'm fixing something I get obsessed with things if I dont think they are right.
