The Early Years

When one thinks of Pink Floyd's early years not too many acoustic songs come immediately to mind. As a guitarist you are more likely to notice the guitars than anything else. The acoustic guitar is used mostly for rhythm on these early songs. As a result it is often camouflaged by Syd's twangy telecaster and Richard Wright's keyboards. Bear in mind that many of these songs were recorded on 8-tracks, which doesn't allow for excellent separation of sound.  Still, when you reduce these early songs to their simplest elements you can come up with interesting acoustic arrangements.

PAINTBOX
We'll start the lesson with Paintbox.  This song was written Richard Wright and if you are wondering where this song comes from, it was released in 1967 as a single. This song is included on the Early Singles CD from the Shine On box set. If you don't have a copy of this CD you may miss out on some of these early singles.

JULIA DREAM
Julia Dream is another interesting early track. The melody is simple and the song is carried by the haunting flute sound. The subtle sound of chains rattling near the end of the songs remind you that this is psychedelic music. With a single acoustic guitar, you can play a decent version of this song. Try finger picking this song. Since there are only a few chord changes this is something a beginner should be able to master with a little effort.

MATILDA MOTHER

Matilda Mother is not actually an acoustic song.  It is, however, an electric song that sounds good when you play the chords on an acoustic.

FLAMING
This is the fourth track on The Piper At The Gates of Dawn.  It uses simple open position chords.

THE GNOME
"Eating, sleeping, drinking their wine."

REMEMBER A DAY
Written by Richard, this song appears on both Pink Floyd's second album A Saucerful Of Secrets and the compilation album Relics.  The track combines a simple descending bass line, sparsely strummed acoustic guitars and an overdubbed slide guitar played by David.

SEE SAW
This song is another one of Richard's compositions.

JUGBAND BLUES
Jugband Blues was Syd's last song with Pink Floyd.   He left the band on 6 April 1968.

BIDING MY TIME
Biding my time is not originally an acoustic song. Here we have guitar tab for both the original as well as an arrangement for solo acoustic. This song features a simple riff that is played throughout the verse.

This concludes the early years section of Acoustic Floyd. If you have mastered all the songs on this page you are ready to move on the the next part of the lesson.  If you haven't mastered all these songs, you can still move ahead. You may have better luck with songs you are more familiar with.
