Niacin – Time Crunch

Progressive/Fusion band Niacin’s newest release is certainly a welcome addition to anyone’s record collection. Featuring Billy Sheehan, John Novello and Dennis Chambers.

The first thing one notices on this album is the strong Emerson, Lake & Palmer influence. Chamber’s drum style, Sheehan’s bass, often reminiscent of Lake’s licks, and, especially, John Novello’s predominent Hammond is played in a style that reflects Emerson’s enhanced abilities. And Novello’s talents are honed enough to play this way. It’s amazing the number of times I’ve had to remind myself that I wasn’t listening to ELP.

A great moment on the album is the band’s rendition of King Crimson’s classic Red. Played differently than Crimso’s version, here are at least musicians worthy of performing such a piece. A huge endeavour it must have been, but one that works quite well.
