Peter Sinfield – Stillusion

A piece of music history!

Peter Sinfield is one of those lyricists who’ve written songs for everyone and their mother. Although he’s better known for his collaborations with Emerson, Lake & Palmer (ELP), Sinfield has been around for a while and has written some of the best lyrics in the business.

This is an album which originally came out in 1973. In the mid-seventies, ELP started their own record label, Manticore. On it they signed several start-up acts, such as the Italian band PFM. As a way of thanking him for his successful collaborations with the band, they asked Sinfield to do an album himself.

In this perspective, you must remember that Sinfield is not a performer, he’s a lyricist. So don’t expect a fantastic voice (although his voice is not unpleasant). However, on the last track Still, he does a nice collaboration with Greg Lake.

Participating musicians include the aforementioned Greg Lake, as well as Mel Collins and John Wetton, both ex-members of King Crimson.

But this is not a progressive album. It works with several genres, mainly Folk and even Country, as well as Pop.

This album is definitely a nice view into what an unsung hero will do when he’s given full liberty. A great re-issue!
