Warren Appleby – Dark Forest Trail
For a self-made album, this one is a cut above! Warren Appleby demonstrates talent both as a songwriter and as a performer.
Beautifully executed instrumentals succeed each other at a fast pace. While obviously inspired by seventies music, this doesn’t fall into the trap of sounding dated. One certainly recognizes a variety of influences ranging from the Doobie Brothers to ELP.
Nightwing is a nice piece placing the accent on the keyboard rather than the guitar, bringing a nice variatoin of style and rhythm, which is gladly welcomed back on Nightwing’s Return.
If there is any sense of disappointment from this album, it would come from it simply being too short in length! Even though it contains thirteen tracks, it clocks in at only twenty-four minutes. It would be nice to listen to this a little longer. Oh well, one can always press the “repeat” button…
