Found this article from bp comparing a few dozen strings of all types - nickels, steels, rounds, flats, and others.
It's more expensive to experiment with bass strings than it is with regular guitar strings, so this might help you make a more informed purchase decision while searching for "your tone."

Yeah, their comments on the D'ad 1/2-rounds are spot on, in my opinion. Wish I had seen that before I bought. I'm going to get the DR Sunbeams next.

Well that was a pretty complete list.
Too bad they didn't include the various wrapped strings, those can sound better than some flats...
I don't know what I'd do without BP...
wow, that just proved to me that the first strings I bought were exactly what I was looking for. D'Addario XL Chromes (Flatwound) I just love the tone you get on passive basses with them.
