What are some of your favorite bass lines? I just recently purchased a bass and want to work on some skills/technique.
Could you please rate them too please. Maybe 1 - 10 (1 being the easiest 10 being the hardest).
Thank you,
Mike
Peaches, by The stranglers - about 3 on the difficulty scale but it replaced Smoke On The Water as the "first riff" people learn in the UK
Seven Nation Army is popular still - about 1 on the difficulty level
Best,
A :-)
"Be good at what you can do" - Fingerbanger"
I have always felt that it is better to do what is beautiful than what is 'right'" - Eliot Fisk

Four of my favorites:
Ballad of John & Yoko (not hard)
This One (Paul McCartney -- a nice fluid bass line)
Ashes to Ashes -- David Bowie (harder because you get to snap & pop)
Under Pressure -- Bowie & Queen (not hard but a great little bass riff)
Well we all shine on--like the moon and the stars and the sun.
-- John Lennon
1.Another one bites the dust (love it really really) by Queen
2.Daddy Cool by Boney M
3.Devil Woman by Cliff Richard (this is very easy)
4.Kung Fu Fighting by Carl Douglas
And wait , lights , camera , applause because here comes the easiest and the best bass riff of all times -
Another brick in the wall (Part II ) :D
Infact try any of the pink floyd basslines , they are really great !
Sheesh , i want a bass now , very , soon , please

Cannonball by the Breeders, Kim Deal (formerly and once again of the Pixies) on Bass. Difficulty is maybe a 6.
Sinister Minister, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Victor Wooten on bass. Probably a 9.5, given it's Wooten.
Higher Ground, RHCP version (Flea of course), dunno what to rate it
Take a Walk on the Wild Side. Velvet Underground, 5
Ditto on Ballad of John and Yoko
-=tension & release=-
Thanks so far guys. Please keep them coming......
The first one I could think of was a Rage Against the Machine tune called Take the Power Back. It has some slappin' and poppin'. I think I have it nailed.
Thanks,
Mike
P.S. - Greg, I think I'm gonna steer clear of Bela Fleck for now. Tim, forgot about Under Pressure thanks.
What about "My Generation" and other who stuff-Entwhisle was a great player.
Another one of my favorites is "Song for America" and other stuff by Kansas-Dave Hope was also a great player
Mel Shacker from Grand Funk was a classis-I love the bass parts on "I'm Your Captain" and pretty much anything on the red album or grand funk live
I guess I can forget finger pickin' on guitar for a couple of days. My pickin' hand is shot! The tips of my fingers are raw!!!
It sure was fun though!!! I've been holding my soda so long it's now warm and flat. Not because I'm thirsty....... but because it's cold!!! Well it was!
"Mike, would you like some cheese with that wine?"
Yes please! Ummmmmmm cheeeeeeeeese.
When I'm practising bass, I always start by playing along with:
Stand by me, Rocky Mountain Way, Dirty Boulevard (Lou Reed), and Roadhouse Blues..... after that, just put WMP on shuffle, and play along - or TRY to play along - with whatever comes on.....
welcome to the "Hey - now I've got callouses on BOTH hands!" club......
:D :D :D

"Sometimes the beauty of music can help us all find strength to deal with all the curves life can throw us." (D. Hodge.)
I wasn't going to do this but, I owe it to my fingers.
Here is a quick sound clip. It will open directly in your media player.
I had fun anyway......
Get Yer Ya Yas Out! (the Stones) is a great play-along album for bass. Wyman never puts a lot of notes in, so there's a lot of room to experiment.
You've reminded me of two of my favorite bass lines:
"Sympathy for the Devil" (easy)
"Live with Me", a bit more challenging perhaps.
Both great bass lines played by Richards! (except, of course, for on Ya-Yas, where it is Wyman).

-- John Lennon
The one that almost made me give up guitar for bass:
Alice in Chains - "Would"
OOOHHHHHH! I have that CD on now! Nice bass line! Thanks

You beat me to it, Nick! That's the lick I think of when I think about bass.
