I would certainly recommend yamaha.Even the plywood top FG-210 which my uncle has...plays good.(he only needs to change the 2 yrs old stock strings  with martin...)
So any higher yamaha would be better for sure.

Quick vote for Seagull - you can't go wrong with an S-series for that price!
Washburn and Alvarez are two others that usually get good reviews.

thanks for the great tips I am heading to the guitar shop now to check out some more guitars.
martin's got a guitar in that range...about $450 though. it's wonderful, i have one and i vouch for it being a great guitar with distinctive tone.

Is it a DX1? That's what I have and I believe it was about that much. I tried every guitar in my price range twice. The only DX1 they had was in the back and it took one strum to know. It's tone and feel hands down beat all the other guitars I had tried. I would reccommend at least giving it a try.
It's not easy being green.... good thing I'm purple.
it is a DX1. i did the same as you and i knew it was MY guitar almost immediately. it's built like a tank too. get it set-up really good, and it's a playin' monster.
just went and had a look at Seagull accustics ...MMMMM very nice pity I can't play though ...
Here is to you as good as you are
And here is to me as bad as I am
As good as you are and as bad as I am
I'm as good as you are as bad as I am
I have a zad-50 and i freaking love it. It plays better than any acoustic i have set my hands on and better than 90% of the electrics i have put my hands on. Great guitar, I have a very hard time putting it down.
Yep, Alvarez guitars are a good choice.

i think someone mentioned it earlier above, but in my personal opinion, I've noticed that Takamine and Seagulls seem to have slightly wider or thicker necks. personally, i have a personal thing about guitar necks, I prefer a thin neck, so the only thing I couldn't handle with takamine and seagulls was that neck thickness. maybe with a taller guy, won't be a problem for you, but just my two cents on that issue.
I have a Takamine GS330S, love it. It's was around $300.
I would also vote for the seagull, i have played around with them in the store and I think they are amazing for the price. Another thing though the Godin Gutiar Company(makes Art and Luthrie, Simon and patrick, Normin, ...Godin, Seagull) all their guitars are class and are usually priced quite abit lower then they need to be.
I always questioned the sound of my Seagull - and then someone else played it. The Seagull sounds great. It must be something else.
Blame it on the lies that killed us, blame it on the truth that ran us down.
I have a Norman. Godin also makes Seagull, Simon and Patrick, and Art and Lutherie. There's going to be slight differences in construction, i prefer the Normans and SPs, but anything made by Godin sounds incredible compared with anything else in the same price range. Play em all until you find one that works for you. The neck on mine looks like zebra stripes (brown and light brown, but) and on the back the laminated wood looks like a human skull.
Play the ones you like all over the fretboard, even if it's just chromatic scales, and have someone play it so you can hear from the front.
And there's maple leaves around the soundhole for you canucks.
