So I keep reading all of these articles about how awful the CAGED system is for learning scales, but they never offer any alternatives. If I'm not using the CAGED system, what system should I be using?

I just learned the modes and scales and trained my ear to hear what key songs are in so I can instinctively go to that root note and pick up with the appropriate scale from there. I've skimmed some information about the CAGED system but don't really use it. Not saying I shouldn't ... just don't currently and it'll probably be something I look at more down the road.
