Here's a question for anyone ...

I'm toying with some bass note shuffles and rhythms. One I've come across just now is confusing me although it's quite possible I'm over thinking. Maybe someone can point something out I'm missing.

Here's the instruction verbatim; "The first bass-note is played (plucked) and then the full chord is played. Then the second bass-note is played and then the full chord is played. This creates an interesting rhythmic pattern that will delight you. Practice this technique on the D Major and A7 chords. In a few short minutes it will sound great."

My hang up is prior to that they specify a ONE, TWO, &, THREE, FOUR, & strumming pattern. Do I: bass pluck, DOWN, bass pluck, DOWN UP, bass pluck, DOWN, bass pluck, DOWN UP?

Curiously,

My guess is play the bass note on one and three. It sounds like this is describing a country / bluegrass feel ("boom chaka" type rythm) which often alternates between the root and fifth note on the chord.

Hope that made sense.
