Hi
I find myself when playing really fast solo peices that i can only down pick, I try to alternate my picking by using upstrokes but then I find I'm not fast enough is using only downstokes on fast solos ok or should I be really alternating my picking.
I just wondered if anyone else doe's it this way.

Practice alternate picking. For single string lines, eventually your alt picking will be far faster than just downstroke picking, as alt picking has more economy of motion. But .... when switching strings it often makes sense to continue the pick stroke in the same direction (downstroke on G string, then downstroke on B string , downstroke on e string and upstrokes going in reverse).
It'll come to you with practice.
