I was fooling around with a song today that has a G Em A D progression. I found that a if I made is D - E A, it sounded pretty much the same, but a little more robust. The only problem I am having is what would I replace the Em with?

OK, assuming the first progression is in the key of G you have;

G...A.....B....C...D....E....F#.....G
I....II...III...IV...V...VI...VII...VIII(I)

So your original progression (G, Em, A, D) is I, VIm, II, V

The same progression in the key of D would be;

D, Bm, E, A

So B minor is the chord you are after

If you know something better than Rock and Roll, I'd like to hear it - Jerry Lee Lewis

To Bob the Cowboy

After 2 months, I doubt it mate. But at some stage soon, you ought to spend at least a little of your time understanding stuff like that.

If you don't you'll end up like me, playing songs based purely on tab, and not being able to figure stuff out for yourself!

There's loads of theory on here, start at the basics and don't move on unless you really understand it. If you have any query at all, post it as a question.

Noteboat on here is just fantastic at answering theory questions, as are quite a few others.

There is a dedicated theory discussion forum too.

All the best

Matt
