Hi Guys

I was analyzing the constituents of a C (root on 6th) barre chord.
So, the root is played by the index on low C, pinky and index on high C.
The middle finger frets the IIIrd, and ring and the index frets the Vth.

Given the fact that the IIIrd controls whether a chord is major or minor, is there a particular
reason why the root and the Vth are trippled and doubled up, respectively,
where as the third is not. Would the tonality change if I were to (somehow) play the root and the
Vth only once but trippled up on the IIIrd? Or if I were to just play the root, IIIrd and thr Vth only once?

Many Thanks,
Vic

The tonality won't change, because you still have only the elements of a C barre chord - but the 'voicing' will change, because those elements are distributed differently.

Take an easier example - a four-note major chord, with the root doubled, played with a root on the first string. Both of these fit that requirement:

-8-8-
-5-8-
-5-9-
-5-10-
-x-x-
-x-x-

The first one is 5R3R, the second is R35R. Both are C major, but with a slightly different sound because the distribution of voices has changed.

a barre chord is created by laying the index finger flat across all the strings at a fret.
that creates what the nut does on the guitar.
the other fingers are then placed on the other strings as Noteboat so acurately said in the above post.

barre chords are good to know.

Audio boy,

Sooner than later you will meet these bad boys.
They are a bit harder than open chords but much more versatile (they are moveable).
