a riff is a short little guitar line. such as the intro to Smoke on the Water, or the intro to Iron Man etc, etc, and so forth.

as for easy riffs that sounds cool check out...

Paranoid by Black Sabbath. Cool intro, easy song altogether really and the intro will get you goin' on hammer-ons and pull-offs

Heartbreaker by Led Zeppelin. Just flat out cool sounding. and you get to bend a few notes!

In-a-Gadda-da-Vida by Iron Butterfly. another simple riff that sounds pretty good.

Black Sabbath has cool intros in generally. umm...Sabbath Bloody Sabbath is good, Electric Funeral is good....

Paint it Black by the Rolling Stones

Running Down a Dream by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

Whole Lotta Love by Led Zeppelin. another tough sounding intro

Instrumental Surf music is chock full of cool riffs...Pipeline by the Chantays. Walk don't Run by the Ventures...

Hey Hey, My My by Neil Young. Mr. David Hodge does a lesson on this wonderful song. easy to play and cool sounding

hope that gives ya some ideas.

me? i rank beginner. my fav. song to play is probably the acoustic version of Cowgirl in the Sand by Neil Young. i also like to play my own stuff. just pick some chords, start strumming and start singing. you'll be suprised as to what kind of music you can make if you forget about trying to make music. just play.

How about Megadeth's "Symphony of Destruction" and Metallica's "Enter Sandman" riffs.

Led Zeppelin's "Living Loving Maid" riff is also a cool one to play.

...er Ted Nugent's "Cat Scratch Fever," Jimi Hendrix "Purple Haze," the "Top Gun Anthem."

:D
