first gig... hooray!... have a great time. try not to be nervous, bring extra picks (I keep a few in that little pocket next to the big one in most jeans, don't change your strings the same date as the gig, don't cut or trim your finger nails the day of the gig, check your gear...is it all ok? does the cord short or look dodgey?....have the set list handy, load in at the correct time, don't trust anyone with watching your gear, and loading is in the white zone.
congrads. you are ready.

As the Boy Scouts say: Be Prepared.

Take an extra set of strings, and the tools you need to change them.
Take extra picks (Like Dog said)
Does any part of your rig use batteries? Put new ones in, and have a spare.
Take an extra extension cord (power will always be about a foot too far away), and an extra guitar cable
Take duct tape.

Now that you've collected those things in a suitable container, you probably won't need them. But I can guarantee that if you don't have that stuff, you'll wish you did.
Having done that, you have hopefully avoided experiencing Sod's law and can enjoy the gig. :D

As everyone said, bring extras like strings, guitar cables, batteries. If you have a spare amp, bring that.

Show up as early as possible. Nothing causes more anxiety and mistakes than having to rush in and set up last minute. Get there so early that you can take your time and set up carefully. And hopefully you will have a chance to do a sound check, play a couple of songs to get all your settings right before anyone shows up.

Don't eat a big meal before you go on, in fact, it's probably best to be a little hungry. Drink plenty of water during the day, loosens the vocal cords up.

Don't be overly concerned or nervous. Tell yourself you are going to go out there and have fun. If you make a few mistakes, don't make a sour face, just laugh it off and keep playing.

Congrats on the gig and as others said, KNOCK EM DEAD! :D

Hi and congratulations!

I dunno if I've missed a previous thread, but I'd like to ask a few questions:

How long have you been playing?
What size venue are we talking about?
Are you the singer for the band?
Whats the songs in your setlist?

I'm just a nebby newbie! :D

Been playing a year, small pub doesn't get to busy (thankfully) i think thats best for a first gig. I play rhythm guitar and a little bit of backing vocals, find out tonight which songs were gonna do, i'll keep you posted.

Take duct tape.

That is universal advice. If your nut breaks, just duct tape the strings to the first fret and pretend you're using a capo. :D
