Hey all.

I'm fulfilling my long standing desire to learn guitar (played wind instruments for a number of years), and I've been taking classical lessons for a few weeks. Things are going great, and just this last week I've gotten to a point where I am very much enjoying the sound of flamenco music. This will be my focus on classical, I think.

Anyhow, this week I've been working on learning the song "Malaguena." The song in my book (Solo Guitar Method or something) is fairly simple and I have it down. I liked the song so much I decided to see what a more advanced arrangement sounded like.

Watch the "high-speed quicktime video."

The strumming he does at the beginning is amazing, and it's definitely something I'd like to start learning. But, I have no idea what he's doing! It looks to be more than fast strumming, he seems to be deliberatly plucking the strings. I tried simulating the effect myself and i couldnt even get close. I realize this is an advanced method that will take some time to learn, but I'm really not sure where to start.

(I realize my instructor could probably answer this question for me, but I'd like to get a head start, and besides, he's still busy teaching me the basics).

Hi, chumpchous, and welcome to Guitarnoise.

Flamenco will give you many years of enjoyment in return for many years of study. The first things you'll need to get working on are the triplet and four-finger rasqueado patterns. If you check out the Flamenco Resources forum over at Foro Flamenco you'll find some video to work from.
