So here the thing I noticed this morning when I was playing.

When I'm standing up (I'm usually either playing a left handed SX Explorer, or a Left handed Epiphone Les Paul).

It's especially bad with the explorer.

When I let go of my guitar completely the neck slides down really far, almost to the ground.

And i realized while I'm playing, my fretting hand is having to compensate while I'm trying to to fret notes and chords...trying to keep the neck up.

I like to play low-slung to a degree and have the neck slanted upwards....

Is there a particular strap I can buy or a way to fix this? Or is this just something I'll have to learn to live with?

It's quite annoying.

Are the guitars neck heavy, that happens with SGs alot, they dive towards the floor. I can't imagine that being the case with an LP, because the bodies are so heavy, but I'm not sure about the explorer. How wide is your strap? My LP is strung at a modest height, not nipple-riding, but not like someone from Korn either, and I've never had a problem.

Try a wider strap slung higher?

A nice wide strap (I like the 3"), and try holding the body down a little with your picking arm (around the wrist).

Not surprising at all with an Explorer, they are neck heavy. The Les Paul is a little surprising, they are not usually neck heavy at all.

Many people change the position of the strap buttons. I could not find an article on the Explorer, but here is an article about the Flying V which suffers the same problem.

Sorry I meant to say only the Explorer had this problem.

The Les Paul stays exactly where it is the entire time.

Okay that makes much more sense now. The explorer is neck heavy. They will dive towards the floor. Try reposistioning the strap button like Wes mentioned, or like myself and Mike said earlier, try a bigger strap.

I played bass for a band a few years back but didn't own a bass of my own. I used the singer's bass (can't remember the make) and man, was it neck heavy. I also couldn't let go of the neck or it would dive. I hated that bass, it made you physically tired to play it.

Later on he loaned me a Fender bass, that was nice. :D

I had the same problem with my explorer, i got a wider leather strap which helped a little. Honestly it still does it even after moving strap buttons around, but now i don't even notice it anymore i've become so use to playing it.

i also put on a custom diamond plate ala James Hetfield that looks great and also helped allot with balancing it out.

Well, I play an SG and it's a super light instrument but the neck dives. I researched and found this strap:

http://www.samash.com/catalog/search.asp?departmentid=0&brandid=2170

It was orininally designed for bass but works great for guitar. It's wide, it flexes/stretches so it's incredibly comfortable. Padded to the maximum. Best of all, it grips your shoulder so no dive issues. I believe in them so much I have two of them! You won't be sorry with it.

i have a 3 inch wide LEATHER strap. it has no padding on it, it's just rough leather on theh underside. when i use it with my Strat, that guitar does not move one inch. i have to pick up the guitar to reposition it on my shoulder. i highly reccomend something like that
