I'm just now trying to pick up guitar for the first time and I'm trying to learn a song that requires me to tune my guitar down a half-step. Can someone explain to me?

Hi and welcome to Guitar Noise

First off, unless you're planning on playing along with the original recording, you're not "required" to tune your guitar down a half-step. Be that as it may...

Your guitar, when in "standard" tuning, is tuned (from low to high) E, A, D, G, B, E. Those are the notes oyu get when you hit the open strings. To tune down a half-step, you want to tune every string lower one half-step so that your strings now play the notes Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, Bb, Eb.

If you have a chromatic tuner, it may use the sharp sign (#) instead of a flat symbol (b). So the notes would be D#, G#, C#, F#, A#, D#.

If you don't have a tuner, let us know and someone will walk you through the steps.

Looking forward to having you on the boards.

Peace
