Hi, I have a tab from Total Guitar mag that has a Blues lick that has a hammer on from fret 5 to fret 8(d string) and then after a few other notes
the tab states a d string on fret 8 - 5 would this be a pull off?? the tab does not indicate 'h' or 'p'.. Sorry I realise without a copy of the tab this maybe a a daft question..and i can't find out how to type the semi cirlcles
to indicate hammer on or pull off's either! doh!

once again your help is appreciated

Cheers

Mark

Most likely a pull off, though I suppose it could also be a slide.

I subscribe to Total Guitar, so if you specify the issue and page number, I can take a look at it for you.

Yep, if I'm bending more than a 1/4 or a 1/2 step, I try to use two fingers. It gives me more power for the bend and also helps me hold the string -- it's less likely to slip away.

thanks for the advice, would you use 2 fingers on the same string you are bending as the video suggests one finger on one string and the other on the string below?

hi again, i have just one more question...

i know how to do a hammer on from fret 5 to fret 7 but can you do it the other way round? i.e fret 7 to fret 5? as i cannot get the note to sound?
would i have to do i pick off to get the note to sound

I can't find this explained anywhere when people explain hammer ons?
Thanks for you help as this has been bugging me!

Cheers

It's called a pull-off. You fret both notes at once (index on 5, ring on 7), pick the note, then drag your ring finger slighly sideways as you lift it off the string. The sideways motion plucks the string, sounding the lower note.

It takes a little bit of practice - the motion has to be farily quick - but it's pretty simple to learn.

In some tunes you'll be playing an open string, hammer, and open string in one motion - for example, in Ben Harper's "Diamonds on the Inside" there's a riff duing the chorus:

-------------------------------
-------------------------------
-2-0-----------------0h2p0---0-
-----2-0---------0h2-------2---
---------2-0------------------
-------------3-1---------------

When I play that, I just do the hammer/pull off on the G string very quickly - no sideways motion - and it rings out just fine.
