Hi all! Great forum, I'm so glad to have stumbled in. I have a dumb question - I'm trying to learn to play Homeward These Shoes by Iron and Wine. Looking at these tabs here ( http://www.guitaretab.com/i/iron-and-wine/187400.html ), I totally get how to play the intro, but I don't understand what to do next. I can play all the chords it calls for, but what is the picking pattern?

Welcome to the party.

It's not a dumb question, but your starting point is to put down your fingers and start using your ears.

I would start by using the pick pattern you use in the intro for all the chords in the verse. Remember though that you don't play the 5th or 6th strings in the D chord, and you don't play the 6th string in the C chord, so you're going to be shifting things around some. Paper and pencil help at this point.

Once you've got that, then you'll need to get listening again and figure out if there are any places where you need to change the note you're playing. Playing along with the original song will help.

Aural skills are incredibly important in music. Make sure your guitar is properly in tune and jump in the deep end - you learn by messing it up a few thousand times.

Thank you so much for your reply! Yeah, I know you're right. I confess I'm a clarinet player so am used to having everything spelled right out for me in sheet music. I have to embrace this new challenge! Thanks.
