In this live performance http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TkVDmqmVZtI he doesn't look he's using anything but his open hand. You can see it best at (approx.) 1:00 and 2:10-2:15. When I first saw the vid I thought he was using a thumb pick, but now I don't think so.

Anyway, I like the way he is playing it as opposed to other covers which slightly p.m. the shuffle portion. Besides, I don't quite have the hang of p.m.'ing yet. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGW_1...eature=related No mistake, this guy is good!

Anyway cutting to the chase, just what is Jim Croce doing here, and how is he doing it? I think he is playing the way the guy in the cover vid is, that is, I think he is playing the E and A shuffle in the verses. The chorus is barre chords... aw what do I know?

looks to me Jim is playing without a pick. I call it 'loose hand strumming' for lack of a better word. he's using the backs of his finger nails.

Now I also see his fingers are slightly curled in, not extended, so that would make his nails hit the strings. Since I've been keeping my nails short, I only hit the strings with the tips. Seems like it's just learning and practicing a new technique, and letting my right hand nails grow a bit. Thanks, now I think I can have some fun with this. :)

You 'uns just ain't a-gonna believe this ratcheer. This here, well if it had teeth it wooda dun bit me. It beed rat in front o' me and plain as the nose on my face all along (why I'm talking like Tennesse Ernie Ford is beyond me... maybe I'm jonesing for I Love Lucy)...

I used a thumb pick, and guess what? (I hate it when people say "guess what?"). I got through the whole song playing with the studio recording, slightly muted with the thumb pick. I think I'd be happier with a medium thumb pick if I can find one. Mine are heavy. Road trip!

I tried B5 (x244xx), A5 (x022xx), E5 (022xxx), then Bmaj, Amaj, Emaj. The 5 chords are easier to switch between each other, and back to the E shuffle. Granted it needs practice, and I need to watch my timing and chords changes, but it didn't suck! :D

Who da man, huh? who da man!?!? I beez da man!
