I have been learning the am pentatonic all over the neck and i am certain the notes of the scale are A C D E G. But iam reading a book which says the interval spelling for minor pentatonic scales is 1 b3 4 5 b7 8 and i cant understand what this means surely it can mean the c and g should be flat. So if you could expalin waht an interval spelling is i would be grateful.
Thanx

It's a cross-reference to the A Major scale rather than an instruction to flatten the notes again.

Example:

A Major - A, B, C#, D, E, F#, G# A

Take the 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 7th notes for your pentatonic

gives you A, C#, D, E, G#

flatten the 3rd and the 7th gives you

A, C, D, E, G - Am pentatonic

An easier way to understand it is simply as the 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 7th elements of the natural minor scale (A, B, C, D, E, F, G, A)

Best,

A :-)

Yes. The major scale is always used as the reference.
