I have been playing the guitar for about 3 months i didn't have a clue about the correct postions for barre chords but i stumbled across this, i think it makes it quite clear on what chord each fret is.

Barre chords with sixth strings roots

Barre chords with fifth strings roots

Fender Player's Club has some good lessons. I found them to be accurate.
the first diagram is cool. it shows the open position.
the barre position is right.

it doesnt show how...
take your left hand and make a fist face up in front of you.
stick your thumb out as in hitch hiking.
stand your fingers straight up.
grab the guitar neck.
you are close to making a barre chord as your hand is in the proper position now.

the index finger lays across the strings covering all of them.
them using your remaining fingers cover the notes indicated.

add a little pressure and strum. ta da.

fret behind the wire not on it.
your thumb is in the middle or close to the middle of the neck pointing forward towards the headstock. that thumb position changes slightly sometimes.

squeeze and release your barres when changing.

let me know how it goes.
have fun.

thats actually what im learning now... looked confusing at first but after a try or two i got it.. i noticed if you finger the chord then strum it slow to make sure yourgetting all the notes to ing out then youll know you have the right form! after a week the pain in your index finger goes away.
