how would you mute a string inbetween 2 strings... like if i were playing my low e and a and trying to mute the d

Sometimes you can do it with the side of one of your fretting fingers--pressing down the low E, you can perhaps touch the A with your finger and mute it.

Another option is to use a free finger on your fretting hand (if they're not all in use :) ) to mute the string 8)
