Hi, I'm 39yrs. old & going through a early midlife crisis...So my wife says
LOL!!!
I was wanting to buy a bass guitar just to have some fun practicing in the
evenings. No I am not going to take this to seriously I was thinking about
going and looking for one at a pawn shop??
I don't (can't) spend over about $300. for everything.
OK.. My question is what brands should I look for models etc..And what should I stay away from???
Please any help would be great, thanks.

I am pretty sure I have seen Bass starter packs in that price range.
That would include your bass, amp, strap, tuner and gig bag.
It wont be top of the line, of course, but should be playable and have a fairly good sound.
As far as used? Do some window shopping at ebay just to get an idea what is out there and what the price range is. (I bought a 3 month old amp for half the price of new, in mint condition)
Don't just go to one pawn shop, if possible.
When you do go take a pad of paper and write down what they have. price, condition ect...
Then go do some research online and see what the best deal really is.
There is a website, I think it is called pre-eabay not sure of the address but you can search for it. It gives the average price for used stuff on ebay and would be a good place to look to see if that pawn shop is charging a fair price (or a great deal)

Keep an eye out on the papers. If you have kids and they have friends ask them.

My daughter wanted to learn bass guitar. her brother asked around at school and sure enough we found a "friend of a friend" that got a complete package and never touched it. There wasn't so much as a scuff on the thing and I could tell it had never been played.

We ended up getting a $500 package for $225. And no tax, it's a private sale. The bass is a Yamaha the amp is a Peavey. Daughter is happy she has a bass guitar and I'm even happier that I saved $300.
