newb needs a 1st guitar/amp to space out!

howzit! I'm looking for help with my 1st guitar and amp purchase.

I'm a total newb and I want to play psychedelic rock/indie/blues - think black keys, MMJ, mr neil young, nirvana, sabbath, ben harper as influences.

I have spent short money on other hobbies only to want/need better equipment rapidly so i prefer not to go wicked cheap but also don't need the ultimate gear either.

I'm thinking guitar + amp = $1000

What should i be looking at??? Thanks in advance.
