well regretabley i used a little and i mean little bit of pledge furniture polish to clean some smudges off of my guitar but i was just wondering will this hurt it

silicone is typically used in these types of polishes. silicone can damage some finishes.
you really don't need wax on the guitar as well.
I use a damp cloth (water)to clean my guitars. I wipe dry with another cloth.

although tempting, household products do not belong on guittars.

A guy working at a guitar shop told me not to by the guitar cleaners they stock (to expensive) but to buy furniture polish, just make sure it doesn't have silicone in it.

Same here. Just make sure to use a very soft cloth that won't scratch the guitar. And make sure the cloth is damp, not wet.
