Hi, how do i play a d power chord g and c so i can play sweet child o mine rythem?? thanks Mark

G power chord - Fret 3 on 6th string; Fret 5 on 5th string; Fret 5 on 4th string

C power chord - Fret 3 on 5th string; Fret 5 on 4th string; Fret 5 on 3rd string

D power chord - same as C power chord, but move everything up two frets.

As noted, you can play them on three strings (root, 5th, octave) or skip the octave and play just two strings, root and 5th.

Hmm, anything by Green Day is usually pretty fun. Also a lot of AC/DC make great use of power chords. The list goes on and on...

Justin also has a lesson on power chord shapes. One more easy song with power chords is 'Smells like teen spirit'. Black Sabbath songs have lot of powerchords in them. Also check songs by Green Day and Blink 182.

Power chords yay !

I'm not sure about Rancid, but the Ramones, Clash, Sex Pistols and Who hardly ever used power chords. Almost all of their songs are full major and minor chords, usually barred.

But of course you could play their songs using power chords but they'd sound a little different.

Sweet child isn't powerchords for the most part - it's D, Cadd9 and G for the verse. Don't let the Cadd9 scare you off, it actually makes it easier when you're starting out:

D Cadd9 G

-2---0---3-
-3---3---3-
-2---0---0-
-0---2---0-
-----3---2-
---------3-

See how the 2nd string is fretted at the third for each of those chords? That'll be your ring finger, and you never need to move it for that part of the song. Because it's always anchored, it'll help your chord changes as your fingers can swivel around it and you don't need to place your entire hand as well as just your fingers. Give it a go! ;)
