What is the purpose of scales? Do they limit you when you are trying to come up with solos? If I'm improvising and focusing on a scale I hear notes in my head that are not in it.

Without scales you have no solo.
The notes you're hearing in your head are accidentals - are you using them as passing notes between Chord Tones or are you going to need chords from outside the key to harmonise them?
